Raman-induced gratings in atomic media

We proposed a new type of electromagnetically induced gratings based on the Raman interaction between a probe (Raman) field and a standing pump field in the three-level atomic system (Fig.4_1). In contrast to electromagnetically induced absorption gratings, our gratings are based on spatial modulation of the Raman gain. We demonstrated that transmission and reflection of a probe Raman field can be simultaneously amplified in the grating (Fig. 4_2). Transmission and reflection spectra can be controlled by varying the pump field intensity. Such structures are of interest for creating all-optical diodes, transistors, and dynamically controlled diffraction gratings and mirrors with amplification.
